The Chaos Wastes
Survive the corruption of the north where the very land screams in agony.
The Chaos Wastes serves as a brutal, high-difficulty campaign scenario within Total War: Warhammer II and III, designed to test even the most seasoned commanders against the relentless forces of the Ruinous Powers. Unlike standard campaigns where players build empires from scratch, this scenario drops factions directly into the heart of the corrupted lands north of Ulthuan, surrounded by hostile Chaos armies and treacherous terrain that actively works against their survival.

Lore & Background
In this desolate expanse, the environment itself is an enemy. Rivers run with black sludge, forests twist into grotesque shapes that mimic suffering flesh, and storms bring not rain but ash and blood. The Wastes are home to the most fanatical cultists and the most powerful Daemons, making it a graveyard for any army foolish enough to enter without preparation. It represents the ultimate frontier of Chaos, a place where the veil between worlds is so thin that reality itself begins to unravel.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the jagged peaks of the Wastes, carrying with it the scent of sulfur and rotting meat. Kaelen tightened his grip on his runic axe, his eyes scanning the horizon where the sky churned in a vortex of violet and crimson. Below him, the ground pulsed as if alive, shifting beneath the feet of his weary Norscan warriors. 'They come,' he whispered, watching the shadows detach themselves from the mist to form into towering horrors of flesh and iron. There was no retreat, only the fight for survival against a world that wanted them dead.
Reader's Guide
The scenario begins with your faction positioned in a precarious location within the Chaos Wastes, often surrounded by powerful enemy lords or daemonic strongholds. Your primary objective is to survive the initial onslaught and establish a foothold before the corruption spreads too far. Key turning points involve defending against scripted Daemonic Incursions that can devastate your armies if not handled quickly. You must also manage the unique terrain effects that drain resources and lower loyalty, forcing you to adapt your strategy constantly. Victory is achieved by holding out for a set number of turns or conquering specific key settlements while maintaining a certain level of control over the region. Failure occurs if your main settlement falls or if your army strength drops below a critical threshold due to attrition and enemy assaults.
